Blue Jays’ Signing Of Anthony Santander Changed Dodgers’ First Pick In 2025 MLB Draft

After missing out on Roki Sasaki, the Toronto Blue Jays pivoted to signing former Baltimore Orioles All-Star Anthony Santander to a five-year, $92.5 million contract.

Because Santander rejected the qualifying offer, the Blue Jays lost their second-highest pick in the 2025 MLB Draft. The Orioles also gained the No. 31 overall pick as compensation for losing the 30-year-old outfielder.

The Blue Jays’ signing of Santander had ramifications on the 2025 MLB Draft first round order. The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired a compensation pick in Competitive Balance Round A as part of the deal that sent Gavin Lux to the Cincinnati Reds.

They were projected to make that selection at No. 37 but instead will pick later because of competitive balance tax penalties. Thus, the Dodgers’ first pick in the 2025 MLB Draft is at No. 40, and they also have the 41st selection from their trade with the Reds.

The Arizona Diamondbacks landed the No. 29 overall pick as compensation for losing Christian Walker to the Houston Astros.

The Orioles were previously awarded the No. 30 pick as a result of Corbin Burnes signing with the Diamondbacks.

The only other compensation pick that has been given out to this point belongs to the Milwaukee Brewers, who will pick at No. 32 after losing Willy Adames to the San Francisco Giants.

More compensation picks could eventually be awarded as Pete Alonso, Alex Bregman and Nick Pivetta remain unsigned.
