The Los Angeles Dodgers were looking to earn their first three-game win streak of the season when they hosted the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday night at Dodger Stadium.
They were not able to do that though, as the Athletics put some runs on the board early and the Dodgers could not come back, falling 16-6.
Alex Wood got the start for the Dodgers and Oakland was able to put up a quick two runs against him in the first after Wood forgot to cover first on a ground ball to Cody Bellinger, allowing Mark Canha to reach base. Khris Davis followed with an opposite-field home run.
The Dodgers got one of those runs back in the bottom half of the first, as former Dodger Trayce Thompson lost a fly ball off the bat of Joc Pederson in the Southern Calfornia sky, leading to a stand-up double. He later scored on a groundout by Corey Seager.
From there it was all Oakland though, as they added five more runs in the fourth inning thanks to Wood struggling and his defense not helping him out.
Wood would have been out of the inning with only one run scoring, but Chase Utley made an error with one out trying to go for a double play when the only play he had was at first base. Wood was chased with two outs in the inning, being replaced by J.T. Chargois who gave up an RBI-single for the Athletics seventh run of the game.
The Dodgers got one of those runs back in the bottom half of the fourth on a solo home run off the bat of Yasmani Grandal, cutting the deficit to 7-2.
Dodgers reliever Scott Alexander struggled with his command in his inning of work, allowing a walk, two singles and threw two wild pitches to allow two more runs to score for Oakland. Josh Fields also was not able to toss a scoreless inning, giving up a double and a single to allow a run to score.
It looked as if Los Angeles might be mounting a comeback in the sixth, scoring two runs and potentially two more on a deep fly ball to center off the bat of Yasiel Puig. His former teammate, Thompson, robbed him of a home run on an outstanding catch to limit the damage to just the two runs though.
Matt Champman and Jed Lowrie put the exclamation mark on the night for Oakland, hitting two-run and three-run shots, respectively, off Wilmer Font to complete the blowout victory.
