Albert Pujols, Dodgers Ranked In Baseball-Reference ‘2021 Sportify Wrapped’

Baseball-Reference released their “2021 Sportify Wrapped,” which ranked the players and teams who were most searched and viewed on their website, and the Los Angeles Dodgers were well represented.

The 2020 World Series champions made multiple key acquisitions in an attempt to defend their title and won 106 games in the regular season before being eliminated by the Atlanta Braves in the National League Championship Series.

While they didn’t achieve their goal, a successful season put the Dodgers among the most popular, most searched and most tweeted about teams of the season.

On the 2021 Sportify Wrapped, the Dodgers were the most viewed team page among NL West teams and NL teams in general. They were, however, bested by the New York Yankees for the most viewed team page in all of MLB.

L.A. also placed in the rankings of most-viewed box scores for a game as Game 6 of the 2020 World Series came in second on the list. Game 6 was, of course, the game where the Dodgers finally clinched that elusive seventh championship with a 3-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

The only box score that was viewed more was Game 7 of the 2016 World Series when the Chicago Cubs won their first title in 108 years by defeating the Cleveland Indians. It’s hard to blame Cubs fans for being nostalgic as the club was trading multiple franchise stars away, including Kris Bryant, Javier Baez and Anthony Rizzo.

The Dodgers also had a player represented on the most viewed player page list as Albert Pujols came in second to his former teammate Shohei Ohtani of the L.A. Angels.

Although Pujols is no longer lighting the baseball world on fire with his stats, his release from the Angels on May 6 was a shock. That day, his player page was the second most viewed player page on a single day. The only page ahead of his on a single day was Hank Aaron’s when he passed away on Jan. 22.

Pujols ended up signing with the Dodgers less than two weeks later and played a key role as a right-handed bat off the bench for the rest of the season.

Pujols also became the most viewed player page in Missouri, the state he played most of his career in, Nebraska and West Virginia.

Sportify Wrapped: Best of the rest

Unsurprisingly, Ohtani dominated the 2021 Sportify Wrapped just as he dominated the competition throughout the season.

The two-way superstar was the most viewed player page total and also earned the most viewed page in 24 states, including California. Pujols’ three states came in second and no one else led in more than two states.

Randy Arrozarena, who made a name for himself during the 2020 playoffs, was the most viewed rookie player page.

Following the Dodgers, the San Francisco Giants took the second spot in the most viewed NL West teams pages while the San Diego Padres came in third, followed by the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies.

Surprisingly enough, the Chicago White Sox and Atlanta Braves were the only two division winners to place as the top spot in their division on the most viewed teams list.
