Patrick Bailey of San Francisco Giants was voted the National League winner for the 2024 Gold Glove Award at the catcher position.
It’s the first time in Bailey’s career he’s won the award. Bailey bested Los Angeles Dodgers All-Star Will Smith and Gabriel Moreno of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Moreno was vying to become the first back-to-back winner among NL catchers since Yadier Molina took home eight Gold Gloves in a row for the St. Louis Cardinals from 2008-2015.
Bailey graded out as a top pitch framer and led all players with a +22 fielding run value. He additionally finished second with nine runners caught stealing above average, with only Smith (10) ahead of him.
Bailey also had the most defensive runs saved at 20, more than double for that of Moreno.
Gold Glove Award winners for the nine standard positions are determined via vote of MLB managers and up to six coaches from each team. Managers and coaches are not permitted to vote for their own players and can only submit ballots for those in their same league.
Those votes amount to 75% of the selection total, with the SABR Defensive Index accounting for the remaining 25%.
For the utility Gold Glove Award, Rawlings collaborates with SABR to create a specialized defensive formula separate from the traditional selection process.

Smith far and away had his best defensive season in 2024, which included leading the NL with a 33.3% caught stealing rate. He threw out 32 total would-be basestealers, which led NL catchers as well.
