2022 Los Angeles Dodgers Player Reviews: Eddy Alvarez

The Los Angeles Dodgers bolstered their depth with numerous Minor League signings prior to the 2022 season, and among them was Eddy Alvarez, who is one of just six athletes to win medals in different sports at both the Summer and Winter Olympics.

Alvarez made his MLB debut with the Miami Marlins in 2020 and appeared in 24 games for them last year before getting outrighted off their 40-man roster.

The 32-year-old began the 2022 season with Triple-A Oklahoma City and joined the Dodgers roster in June when Edwin Ríos was placed on the injured list due to a right hamstring strain.

Alvarez filled a super utility role but largely struggled at the plate, going 4-for-25 with three RBI and nine strikeouts in 14 games (nine starts). He was with the team until getting optioned to OKC on July 3 once Mookie Betts was activated off the 10-day IL.

While with the Dodgers, Alvarez spent time at third base, shortstop and both corner outfield positions, and embraced learning how to play right field on the fly.

During his time with Oklahoma City, Alvarez batted .322/.439/.554 with nine doubles, eight home runs and 29 RBI over 47 games. He went 9-for-19 with three homers and seven RBI in five games after returning to OKC in July.

Unfortunately for Alvarez, he was placed on the seven-day Minor League injured list July 13 and didn’t appear in another game.

On August 30, Alvarez was designated for assignment in order to make room for Heath Hembree on the Dodgers 40-man roster. He was released by the organization on September 11 after clearing waivers.

Eddy Alvarez 2022 highlight

Alvarez collected his only multi-hit game of the season on June 5, going 2-for-4 in a 5-4 loss to the New York Mets.

2023 outlook

After a disappointing end to his 2022 season, Alvarez will look to bounce back with the Milwaukee Brewers next year. He signed a Minor League contract with the organization that includes an invitation to Major League camp for 2023 Spring Training.
