Ahead of a pivotal tie-breaking Game 5 with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Milwaukee Brewers announced that right-handed pitcher Zach Davies has replaced Gio Gonzalez on their National League Championship Series roster.

Gonzalez, the Brewers’ starting pitcher in Games 1 and 4 against the Dodgers, suffered a high ankle sprain in his outing at Dodger Stadium on Friday. He faced all of seven batters in one-plus inning of work, yielding two hits, one walk and one run.

Gonzalez was relieved by Freddy Peralta, who promptly worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the second inning. Peralta wound up logging three innings of relief without allowing a hit while additionally striking out six batters against three walks.

After coming out on the losing side of a 13-inning marathon, the Brewers will certainly welcome a fresh arm to their bullpen in Davies. The 25-year-old struggled during the regular season and wasn’t included on Milwaukee’s NL Division Series roster as a result.

In 13 starts, Davies was 2-7 with a 4.77 ERA, 4.39 FIP and 1.33 WHIP across 66 innings pitched. He accumulated 49 strikeouts to 21 walks and allowed eight home runs on the year.

Given the state of the Brewers’ bullpen, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Davies make an appearance in Game 5. Of Milwaukee’s other relievers, only Xavier Cedeno and Jeremy Jeffress were preserved in Friday’s loss to the Dodgers.
