2017 World Series: Dodgers Edge Astros In Win Probability

In a matchup with the Houston Astros, the Los Angeles Dodgers have a 55 percent probability to win the 2017 World Series, per analytical model FiveThirtyEight. It’s in line with what’s held true for the Dodgers since the postseason began.

Once the League Championship Series fields were set, the Dodgers held the highest probability to reach and win the World Series, at 60 percent and 27 percent, respectively. Predictions are updated after each game is played.

That Houston and Los Angeles are meeting in the Fall Classic is a fitting end to the baseball season. Even with the Cleveland Indians going on a 22-game winning streak, and the Dodgers’ dropping 16 of 17 games at one point, them and the Astros have long been viewed as the best teams in baseball.

The World Series matchup between teams who each won at least 100 games during the regular season is a first since the Baltimore Orioles (108-54) defeated the Cincinnati Reds (102-60) in 1970.

Furthermore, it’s only the eighth time in MLB history both league champions finished with 100-plus wins. The Dodgers paced the Majors with a 104-58 record, while the Astros finished 101-61, good for third-best overall record and one game behind the Indians.

Dodger Stadium is playing host to Games 1 and 2 of the World Series on Tuesday and Wednesday, and would be the site for Games 6 and 7 on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, should the series reach that point.

The Dodgers are in the World Series for the first time since 1988, and 19th overall berth. While the Astros have reached the Fall Classic a second time in their franchise history. As a member of the National League, they were swept by the Chicago White Sox in the 2005 World Series.
