The first three batters of the game reached against Hyun-Jin Ryu, resulting in the Philadelphia Phillies taking an early lead, but he settled in from there and the Los Angeles Dodgers went on for a 5-3 win to complete a three-game sweep.

Ryu managed to minimize the damage in the first inning to just one run. He proceeded to retire eight in a row, including four by strikeout. The streak snapped when Daniel Nava worked a two-out walk in the third inning.

Nick Pivetta was knocked around early in his MLB debut, but similar to Ryu, prevented innings from spiraling out of control.

After Andrew Toles ground-rule double to lead off the bottom of the first, Cody Bellinger grounded softly into a shift that was too deep, resulting in an infield single. Justin Turner’s RBI single tied the game and extended his career-best hitting streak to 16 games.

Pivetta struck out Adrian Gonzalez and induced Yasiel Puig into a double play to end the inning. The Dodgers struck again in the second inning, with Chris Taylor’s solo home run breaking the 1-1 tie.

Kiké Hernandez followed with a double and Ryu drew a walk. Hernandez then advanced to third base on an errant pickoff attempt at second base, but both runners were stranded by Toles and Bellinger.

Rupp led off the fifth inning with a double, only to be picked off by Yasmani Grandal shortly thereafter. The Phillies didn’t manage anything else, and their deficit remained 2-1. Turner’s double in the bottom of the fifth didn’t lead to anything for the Dodgers, though it gave him the National League lead in doubles this season at 11.

Ryu struck out Nava in the sixth after issuing a leadoff walk, and gave way to Sergio Romo. He followed in Ryu’s footsteps by striking out both batters faced. Ryu’s afternoon ended at 5.1 innings pitched, with just one run allowed on three hits. He finished with a season-high nine strikeouts.

Toles’ three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth provided the Dodgers with what proved to be needed insurance. Turner’s one-out single gave him three hits on the afternoon, and raised his averages to .404/.465/.562.

Following Romo, Luis Avilan and Pedro Baez combined for two scoreless innings. Grant Dayton surrendered a two-run home run to Odubel Herrera with two outs in the ninth. The run(s) were the first Dayton allowed this season.

That forced Dodgers manager Dave Roberts’ hand in calling on Kenley Jansen. He promptly struck out Cesar Hernandez on three pitches to earn the save.

The Dodgers’ victory gave them their first series sweep of the season and extending their winning streak to four games. Ryu earned his first win since Aug. 31, 2014.
