Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz was the only player elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame by the Baseball Writers Association of America for the 2022 class, receiving 77.9% of the votes in his first year of eligibility.

Meanwhile, Barry Bonds (66%), Roger Clemens (65.2%), Curt Schilling (58.6%) and Sammy Sosa (18.5%) fell short of the required 75% threshold in their final year on the ballot.

The 2022 National Baseball Hall of Fame ballot consisted of 30 candidates, including seven players with ties to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Gary Sheffield remained at 40.6% in his eighth year of eligibility, while Andruw Jones went from 33.9% to 41.1% in his fifth year.

Jeff Kent also received a small jump in his ninth year on the ballot, going from 32.4% to 32.7%. Manny Ramirez saw a slight increase as well, increasing from 28.2% to 28.9% in his sixth year. Bobby Abreu was the only former Dodger whose support declined, dipping from 8.7% to 8.6% in his third year.

What’s more, Jimmy Rollins received 9.4% of votes in his first year of eligibility. Carl Crawford, however, did not earn a single vote and will be removed from future ballots.

The 2022 Induction Ceremony will take place at 4:30 p.m. PT on Sunday, July 24, on the grounds of the Clark Sports Center. In addition to Ortiz, Golden Days Era Committee electees Gil Hodges, Jim Kaat, Minnie Miñoso and Tony Oliva, and Early Baseball Era Committee selections Bud Fowler and Buck O’Neil will be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Dodgers’ Betts congratulates Ortiz on Hall of Fame induction

Mookie Betts, who was teammates with Ortiz from 2014-16, was among the several players to congratulate him on reaching Cooperstown.

Betts was a first-time All-Star in 2016, which coincided with Ortiz’s last time making the Midsummer Classic and his final season in the Majors.
