The Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) recently made a splash by acquiring international soccer star Heung-Min Son from Tottenham Hotspur of the English Premier League for a record-breaking transfer fee of reportedly $26 million.
“I’m incredibly proud to be joining LAFC, a club with big ambitions in one of the most iconic sports cities in the world,” Son said in a statement.
“Los Angeles has such a rich history of champions, and I am here to help write the next chapter. I’m excited for this new challenge in MLS. I have come to L.A. to lift trophies and give everything for this club, this city, and its fans. I cannot wait to get started.”
Son is now set to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at Dodger Stadium before the Los Angeles Dodgers face the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday, Aug. 27.

A native of Chuncheon, South Korea, Son is one of the most talented and popular Asian players in soccer history. He is among the country’s all-time leading scorers and has appeared in three World Cups throughout his illustrious career.
Son joins LAFC after an iconic 10-year run with Tottenham Hotspur, where he scored 173 goals and registered 101 assists across all competitions, while also becoming the first Asian player to win the Premier League Golden Boot in 2021–2022.
Son was twice named Tottenham Hotspur’s Player of the Year, selected to the PFA Team of the Year, and helped lead the club to the 2019 UEFA Champions League Final.
Heung-Min Son welcomed by Dodgers
Hyeseong Kim and Tommy Edman, both of whom have Korean heritage, welcomed Son in a video message shared by the Dodgers.
“First, I want to congratulate you for joining LAFC,” Kim said. “I love soccer, so I’m a huge fan of yours, but yo know that we’re both playing in Los Angeles is an honor, and it makes me happy. I will continue to root for your success in L.A.”
Edman added: “I just wanted to welcome you to the city of Los Angeles. We’re really fired up to have you here, I know the fans are going to love you and you’re going to love your time here as well. I can’t wait to see you at a Dodgers game soon, and I’m hoping to make it out to an LAFC game.”
