Brandon Gomes: Dodgers Farm System ‘As Talented Of A Group As I’ve Seen’

The Los Angeles Dodgers farm system has turned out noteworthy talent in recent years, with several prospects emerging as key contributors in the Majors.

That figures to be no different in 2023 as the likes of Bobby Miller, Gavin Stone, James Outman and Miguel Vargas are among those projected to make an impact at some point.

Of that group, Vargas was the only one to see extended action at the MLB level last season. Michael Grove, Outman and Ryan Pepiot were among the organization’s other top farmhands who also played in their first big league game last year.

Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes recently praised the Dodgers’ Minor League pipeline and believes it’s as good of a group as he’s seen, per Juan Toribio of MLB.com:

“It’s as talented of a group as I’ve seen,” general manager Brandon Gomes said. “Now it’s about finding time for them without putting too much pressure on them. … It’s a very versatile group.”

Despite recent graduations and picking at the bottom of the draft due to their success, the Dodgers routinely boast one of the top farm systems in all of baseball.

The talent and depth at the Minor League levels is part of the reason why the organization was so comfortable letting several longtime contributors depart in free agency this offseason.

Dave Roberts expects Miguel Vargas to have significant role for Dodgers during 2023 season

Vargas figures to be line for plenty of opportunities next season, and it appears likely to come at second base.

“He’s a silent assassin, and I say that as the biggest compliment,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of Vargas last September.

“He’s got this youthful, boyish smile and disposition, but he is as tough as they come. He was raised in a baseball home, he knows the game inside and out, his baseball acumen is off the charts.

“When he’s in the batter’s box, he thinks that he’s the best option, and that confidence is pretty cool to see. But there’s also humility there. I’m excited to have him. He’s earned it and I expect him to impact us in the short term and also the long term. He should be wearing a Dodger uniform for a long time.”
