Gavin Lux returned to Dodger Stadium this week for the first time since being traded by the Los Angeles Dodgers to the Cincinnati Reds during the offseason.
Some highlights of Lux’s tenure with the Dodgers include becoming the top prospect in baseball and winning two World Series. However, not all was good as Lux missed the entire 2023 season after tearing the ACL in his right knee.
Another scary incident took place in 2021 when Lux crashed into the center field wall at full speed while attempting to make a running catch during a game against the San Diego Padres.
Lux recalled the moment his face hit the wall and said he was more embarrassed than anything else while also worrying about then-teammate Max Scherzer, via “On Base With Mookie Betts” podcast:
“I felt it smash my face. I kind of like black out for a second and look up, and AJ Pollock is over me like, ‘Hey man, are you OK? Are you OK?’ And I’m like, ‘Scherz is going to kill me, man.’ Because Scherzer was pitching. Scherz is going to kill me. What a train wreck. My neck hurt the next day. That was embarrassing. And then they left it up for the game, for like two games. I’m like, ‘Can we take it down, man? It’s embarrassing.'”
Lux sustained a neck stinger on the play and ended up missing three games. That didn’t stop the Dodgers from making light of the incident as they taped an outline of his body on the wall.
“That would be (video coordinator) Chad Chop and that would be (clubhouse attendant) Chico’s body outline,” Lux said at the time.
“He’s a littler thicker and shorter than me. I think it’s hilarious. [Chop] was like, ‘Can I do that?’ I’m like, ‘I don’t care. It’s a good way to make a joke about it.’ Now looking back at it, we can joke about it. It’s funny.”
Cody Bellinger, Mookie Betts and AJ Pollock each ran out to the spot and tapped the wall before taking their positions in the first inning of the next game.
Gavin Lux receives World Series ring
Lux received his 2024 Dodgers World Series ring from his former teammates this week. He also got his gold Dodgers jersey and cap, while the team played a tribute video that included some of his top highlights in L.A.
