Recap: Dodgers Swept By Giants Into Third Place Of NL West Standings

Tony Gonsolin allowed seven earned runs for the first time in his career and the Los Angeles Dodgers couldn’t muster enough offense to overcome his struggles in a 7-3 loss to the San Francisco Giants on Father’s Day.

The Dodgers have fallen into third place in the National League West by virtue of being swept by the Giants, who extended their season-best winning streak to seven games.

The weekend series is the first time the Dodgers have been swept by the Giants since June 10-12, 2022, at Oracle Park. The Giants’ sweep is their first in a three-game series at Dodger Stadium August 20-22, 2012.

Starting on regular rest despite ongoing concern with his recovery between outings, Gonsolin was efficient as he retired the first nine batters faced.

But Lamonte Wade Jr.’s leadoff walk in the fourth inning and Joc Pederson getting hit by a pitch wound up sparking the Giants. Two fly balls brought in Wade and Mike Yastrzemski delivered a two-out RBI single to score Pederson.

After James Outman’s RBI single cut the Dodgers’ deficit in half in the bottom of the fourth, the Giants pushed across another run against Gonsolin in the fifth.

The game then began to slip away in the sixth inning as the Giants scored four more runs. Gonsolin was removed with two runners on, one of which scored when Wade lined a base hit off Freddie Freeman’s glove. Blake Sabol added an RBI single before Victor González could get through the inning.

Some semblance of a rally started in the bottom of the ninth when the first two batters reached and they loaded the bases with one out. Will Smith was hit by a pitch but that was the lone run the Dodgers managed to score.

Freddie Freeman next Dodgers injury?

Freeman legged out a hustle double in the bottom of the fifth inning and it eventually led to a run, but he also appeared to jam his right wrist when sliding into second base.

Freeman regularly grabbed and massaged his wrist while on the bases and was checked on by a trainer after scoring before remaining in the game.
