Mookie Betts returned to the lineup and the Los Angeles Dodgers closed out Spring Training with a 4-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels in the finale of the Freeway Series.
Betts went 0-for-3 and played five innings in his first game since March 9. He’d been out because of a mysterious illness that caused significant weight loss and vomiting whenever Betts ate solid food.
The Dodgers took an early lead thanks to Will Smith’s two-run home run. The opposite-field homer was Smith’s second of the spring.
That was all the Dodgers mustered for most of the night but Dustin May and Minor League relievers upheld it. A wild pitch and Miguel Rojas’ sacrifice fly extended the Dodgers’ lead to 4-1 in the ninth.
May allowed just one run on and one hit over five innings. He induced plenty of whiffs like Tyler Glasnow the night prior, and collected six strikeouts.
May held the Angels scoreless through three innings before a hit by pitch and two-out walk wound up leading to an RBI single by Logan O’Hoppe.
Sam Carlson, Jack Little and Logan Boyer each pitched one inning. Patrick Copen started the ninth but gave way to Lucas Wepf with two outs.
The Dodgers won four of five Spring Training games against the Angels this year, which included two Cactus League victories.
Dodgers Opening Day
The Dodgers are off Wednesday and then face the Detroit Tigers in the Dodger Stadium opener. Blake Snell is starting the series opener, and Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Roki Sasaki are lined up for the rest of the Tigers series.
“I’m excited. Get to start the season with everyone, just very excited,” Snell said of his start. “Opening Day is fun. It’s such a fun time to pitch. I’m very excited, I feel honored and I can’t wait.”
