After splitting the first two games of the Freeway Series, the Los Angeles Dodgers and L.A. Angels now meet for the rubber match on Mother’s Day. The Dodgers are looking to win their first series since taking two of three from the San Diego Padres at Petco Park (April 16-18).
They also are trying to earn back-to-back wins for the first time since that series against the Padres. The Dodgers haven’t lost a three-game series to the Angels since dropping two of three in Anaheim from June 11-13, 2012.
The Dodgers are 6-3 on Mother’s Day in the past 10 years. There was not a game on the holiday last season, and the aforementioned losses came in 2014, 2017 and 2018.
Trevor Bauer is looking to rebound from his shortest start of the season — 4.1 innings — and faces the Angels for the first time since 2017. While much of it has come in the past against much different lineups than what Bauer will see Sunday, he’s a career 4-0 with a 2.70 ERA in five starts against the Angels.
Bauer is 3-1 with a 2.44 ERA in seven starts and leads all Dodgers pitchers with 58 strikeouts.
He’s opposed Jose Quintana, who has struggled to the tune of an 0-3 record and 10.59 ERA in five starts. The southpaw has only gone more than four innings once this year, and allowed at least four earned runs in four starts.
Quintana faces a Dodgers lineup that may have found its footing on Saturday. At minimum, Mookie Betts and Max Muncy have started to swing the bat much better since a slow start this season, and Justin Turner continues to be a steady and productive presence.
