The 2023 World Baseball Classic continued Sunday, which saw 13 different teams in action across seven games. As was the case the previous day, multiple Los Angeles Dodgers players made significant contributions.
Freddie Freeman helped lead Team Canada to an 18-8 win over Great Britain in seven innings. The six-time All-Star went 2-for-5 with one walk, one RBI and three runs scored.
Freeman’s RBI single in the bottom of the fourth increased Canada’s win probability by 8.1% to 89.8%. Meanwhile, Trayce Thompson had another productive day at the plate for Great Britain as he went 1-for-3 with one walk and one RBI.
Dodgers outfielder David Peralta shines for Venezuela
After going 2-for-3 with three RBI and a walk in an upset win over the Dominican Republic on Saturday, David Peralta continued to be a bright spot for Venezuela.
Peralta went 1-for-3 with one RBI and a pair of walks in the team’s 9-6 victory over Puerto Rico. The 35-year-old is now batting .500/.667/.667 with one double, three walks and four RBI in two WBC games.
Austin Barnes battles Mookie Betts & Will Smith in Phoenix
Austin Barnes, Mookie Betts and Will Smith may be Dodgers teammates, but they were in opposite dugouts on Sunday as Mexico faced the United States at Chase Field in Arizona.
Barnes started behind the plate for Mexico and went 1-for-4 with a walk and two stolen bases in the team’s 11-6 win. Betts once again was in the leadoff spot for the USA, but continued to struggle by going 0-for-5.
Meanwhile, Smith got the start at catcher for the United States and went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh that trimmed Mexico’s lead to 7-2. The blast had a minimal effect on the outcome of the game as it only increased the USA’s win probability by 1% to 1.8%.
