The Los Angeles Dodgers closed out the month of May with the best record in the National League, which was due in large part to Freddie Freeman going on a historic run.

Freeman set new Dodgers records for most extra-base hits (24) and doubles (17) in a calendar month.

Babe Herman (July 1930) and Duke Snider (June 1954) previously shared the Dodgers record for most extra-base hits in a single month with 23. Herman also held the Dodgers franchise record of most doubles in a month with 16, which came in July of 1930 as well.

Freeman set the Dodgers doubles record in Monday’s win against the Washington Nationals, and put himself atop the list for most extra-base base hits in a month with a home run on Tuesday night.

“I had no idea,” Freeman said of breaking the Dodgers’ extra-base hits record. “I’m just glad. Usually those things happen in losses, but this is nice.”

While the Dodgers fell short of sweeping the Nationals, Freeman went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 20 games. He’s batting .457 with 11 doubles, one triple, five home runs 21 RBI and 20 runs scored during the stretch.

Starting in all 28 of the Dodgers’ games in May, Freeman hit safely in all but two contests. He additionally produced 16 multi-hit games, with his best effort being a four-hit night on Tuesday.

Overall this season, Freeman leads the Majors with 23 doubles, 34 extra-base hits and 134 total bases.

Freddie Freeman hitting streaks

Freeman’s longest hitting streak of his career was 30 games as a member of the Atlanta Braves during the 2016 season. He previously had a 20-game hitting streak in 2011.

Prior to his current stretch, Freeman’s longest hitting streak with the Dodgers was 13 games, set June 15-June 29, 2022.
