In association with Major League Baseball, FOX Sports Films is premiering an hour-long documentary, “Walk-Off Stories: Improbably Gibson,” after on FS1 after their postgame coverage of Game 3 of the National League Division Series.
The episode is one of three hour-long documentaries FOX Sports is producing as part of their expanded coverage of the sport. In the weeks after highlighting Gibson and the Los Angeles Dodgers, FOX Sports will focus on Jim Abbott and Aaron Boone.
“These three October baseball documentaries, featuring unique moments and athletes, add a different perspective and amplify our brand’s coverage of the sport’s most exciting month,” executive vice president of content at FOX Sports Charlie Dixon said.
“Improbably Gibson” is directed by Mike Tollin and Jon Weinbach of Mandalay Sports Media. The film focuses on Gibson’s walk-off home run in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series, and features unique footage and interviews with Gibson, Dennis Eckersley, Orel Hershiser, Vin Scully, Dave Stewart, and more players, coaches and broadcasters.
This Oct. 15 will mark the 30-year anniversary of Gibson’s dramatic home run. “I was so competitive, all I wanted to do was beat somebody,” Gibson says in the documentary. “I thought I could make a difference. I was excited to do it. I thought when the crowd sees me, I won’t hurt.”
On the other end of the home run was Eckersley, the Oakland Athletics’ vaunted closer. A portion of his interview includes comments from Eckersley on his exasperation while waiting for the injured Gibson to make his way to the batter’s box.
“Walk-Off Stories: Improbably Gibson” is set to air Sunday, Oct. 7, at 8:30 p.m. PT.
