The Miami Marlins hired Clayton McCullough as their 17th manager in franchise history, as he takes over after Skip Schumaker spent two seasons in the role.
McCullough interviewed for several managerial openings in recent years and this offseason was among the candidates the Chicago White Sox considered before hiring Will Venable.
With McCullough now in place as manager, filling out the Marlins coaching staff is among the franchise’s next steps.
According to Christina De Nicola of MLB.com, the Marlins are expected to hire Pedro Guerrero as their hitting coach on McCullough’s staff:
A source told MLB.com that Pedro Guerrero will step in as the club’s hitting coach.
Guerrero, a former Minor League player in the Dodgers farm system, is not to be confused with the beloved World Series champion who played 11 seasons with the team.
The Guerrero the Marlins are poised to hire is due to join the team from the San Francisco Giants. He worked as an assistant hitting coach on the Giants staff from 2022-2024, with two of those years coming under former manager Gabe Kapler.
Before joining the Giants, Guerrero was an assistant hitting coach with the Philadelphia Phillies from 2018-21, coinciding with Kapler’s time as manager during the 2018 and 2019 seasons.
Kapler, who has prior ties to McCullough as well, is currently the Marlins’ assistant general manager.
Guerrero is replacing John Mabry as Marlins hitting coach. It’s not yet clear if Miami will find direct replacements for assistant hitting coaches Bill Mueller and Jason Hart as well.
Pedro Guerrero’s Dodgers career
Like the elder player he shares a name with, Guerrero began his professional career as an international free agent out of the Dominican Republic.
Guerrero debuted with the Dominican Summer League Dodgers in 2006 and made the jump stateside two years later with the organization’s Gulf Coast League affiliate.
Guerrero was a Dodgers Minor Leaguer through the 2013 season. He was the bench coach for Rookie-level Ogden from 2016-2017.
