The Los Angeles Dodgers approached the trade deadline with a clear focus to acquire a starting pitcher, which was the same position they were in last season.

That led to the Dodgers and Detroit Tigers agreeing to an Eduardo Rodriguez trade that included a package of prospects who were unknown.

Rodriguez would have been a weapon for the Dodgers into the playoffs, but wound up nixing the deal by invoking his no-trade clause. The Dodgers then shifted to acquire Lance Lynn from the Chicago White Sox, in what proved to be an uneventful move that didn’t provide them with much.

According to Jon Morosi of MLB Network, former Dodgers prospect Jorbit Vivas was among those being sent to the Tigers in the failed Rodriguez trade:

Vivas remained with the Dodgers until the offseason, when he was traded to the New York Yankees for Trey Sweeney. However, Sweeney’s time in the Dodgers organization was brief as he was then moved to the Tigers at this year’s deadline as part of the Jack Flaherty trade.

The full-circle move rarely happens as close as this, but prospects opening doors for other deals is quite common around Major League Baseball.

Vivas’ inclusion in the second trade provided the Dodgers with the assets needed to make a necessary move, landing the frontend arm that they still required.

Where is Jorbit Vivas now?

Starting out the 2024 season with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, Vivas spent a majority of his time with the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate.

The 23-year-old infielder has batted a combined .240/.379/.357 across 61 games between three levels of the Yankees’ Minor League system. Vivas’ best shot to reaching the Majors is by ways of the middle infield, but the Yankees still have several veteran options in front of him.

The Yankees did recall Vivas during the middle of July but he did not make his MLB debut before getting optioned back to Triple-A.
