Longtime MLB veterans Nick Ahmed and Jesse Chavez announced their retirements this week. With 30 season’s of Major League experience between them, both players found their way to the Los Angeles Dodgers over the course of their respective careers.
Ahmed was the most recent member of the Dodgers between the two, playing 17 games with the team in 2024. Ahmed began the year with the San Francisco Giants after being released by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2023.
In the wake of injuries to Mookie Betts and Miguel Rojas, the Dodgers signed Ahmed as a temporary solution at shortstop. He hit .229/.245/.292 with one home run and two RBI during his limited time with the Dodgers.
Ahmed was designated for assignment and elected free agency upon clearing waivers. He eventually signed a Minor League contract with the San Diego Padres and appeared in two games for them in 2024. That left him one team shy of completing a tour of the National League West.

Ahmed spent the first 10 years of his career with the Diamondbacks, winning two Gold Gloves at shortstop during that time.
He appeared in five games for the Texas Rangers this season before being designated for assignment on May 2 and electing free agency days later.
Meanwhile, Chavez played for 9 different organizations over his 18 seasons in the Majors, the bulk of which came with the Atlanta Braves.
Chavez announced his retirement during an appearance on “Foul Territory“.
Chavez was acquired by the Dodgers from the Toronto Blue Jays in 2016, posting a 4.21 ERA with 21 strikeouts in 25.2 innings. He was not included on the Dodgers’ NL Division Series or NL Championship Series rosters that October.
Chavez made his postseason debut in 2018 with the Chicago Cubs, pitching one scoreless inning. He had a good postseason performance for the Braves during their World Series run in 2021. He delivered 6.1 scoreless innings, including 2.2 to help the Braves knock off the reigning World Champion Dodgers in the NLCS.
The 41-years-old made four appearances for the Braves in 2025, allowing eight earned runs in eight innings. He was designated for assignment on July 17, and elected to become a free agent on July 21.
