Former Dodgers Catcher Tony Wolters Retires

Former Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Tony Wolters retired after playing in the Major Leagues over parts of seven seasons and has taken on a coaching position with the Colorado Rockies organization.

Wolters made the announcement on his Instagram page.

Wolters was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the third round of the 2013 MLB Draft and later claimed off waivers by the Rockies in 2016. Wolters made his MLB debut with the Rockies that season and remained part of the team for five years in a backup/platoon role.

The Rockies non-tendered Wolters following the 2020 season and he went on to sign a Minor League contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates. His deal included a non-roster invite to 2021 Spring Training but Wolters was only part of the Pirates organization for six weeks.

He was released by the Pirates at the end of February and quickly signed with the Chicago Cubs, receiving another Minor League deal. Wolters appeared in 14 games for the Cubs before again becoming a free agent, which paved the way to joining the Dodgers.

Although that amounted to signing a Minor League contract, it came with some stability as Wolters remained part of the Dodgers organization through the 2022 season. Though that stretch included signing two more deals with the team.

Wolters then joined the Minnesota Twins for the 2023 season but he only appeared in games for their Triple-A affiliate.

Tony Wolters’ stats with Dodgers

During his time with the Dodgers organization, Wolters reached the Majors just once, in August 2022, when Austin Barnes was put on the family emergency list.

While up with the Dodgers, Wolters appeared in two games (one start) during a weekend road series against the Kansas City Royals. He went a combined 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in those games.

The Vista, California, native otherwise hit .230/.321/.284 with nine doubles and 29 RBI over 61 games with the OKC Dodgers in 2022.
