Exhibition Freeway Series Preview: Shohei Ohtani Makes First Dodger Stadium Start With Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers enter the final leg of their exhibition schedule with a Freeway Series against the Los Angeles Angels. The first two games of the three-game set takes place at Dodger Stadium, marking the home debut of their re-tooled lineup.

Bobby Miller makes his final start of the spring after somewhat disappointing results through Cactus League play. The 24-year-old posted a 4.32 ERA, 1.44 WHIP with four strikeouts in 8.1 innings pitched (three starts).

His sophomore season is shaping up to be a solid follow-up to his rookie campaign, with additions at the front-end of the rotation to take a load off his plate. Miller’s 124.1 innings for the Dodgers in 2023 are likely a benchmark he’ll top this year, and a refined pallet of secondary pitches should boost his production.

In his Seoul Series start against Team Korea, Miller tallied six strikeouts over five innings, allowing two runs.

For the Angels, Griffin Canning takes the mound to wrap up a strong run in Spring Training. The 27-year-old carried a 2.25 ERA, 1.67 WHIP, with 10 strikeouts over 12 innings pitched (four starts).

Canning is an option for their Opening Day starter, according to Angels manager Ron Washington.

He’s coming off a 2023 season in which he was effective, going 7-8, with a 4.32 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and a .245 batting average allowed. Canning slots in nicely into an Angels’ rotation that is in need of a clear workhorse.

Canning faces a Dodgers lineup that has had their way with average right-handed starters in years past. Their patience in the Seoul Series was evident, allowing them to wear down pitchers and providing power when needed.

This will be the Dodgers’ first appearance at Dodger Stadium since signing Shohei Ohtani, and his long awaited home debut comes on the heels of an ongoing investigation from Major League Baseball and federal investigators into illegal gambling activities from his former interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara.

While the investigation is ongoing, Ohtani will remain eligible to stay with the team and play in games.
