The Los Angeles Dodgers presented Dustin May received his 2025 World Series ring Friday ahead of the series opener in St. Louis.

He was greeted by manager Dave Roberts and various former teammates in pictures shared by the team on social media. May at one point also put on his Dodgers gold jersey for some photos.

Selected by the Dodgers in the third round of the 2016 MLB Draft, May played parts of six seasons in L.A. but was traded to the Boston Red Sox at last year’s deadline.

The Dodgers’ former No. 2 overall prospect had an extremely promising start to his career that was unfortunately derailed by an extensive list of injuries. After making his Major League debut in 2019, May hadn’t completed a full season prior to 2025.

May flashed immense potential and an electric arsenal of pitches, but injuries limited him to just 191.2 innings from 2019-24. He set career highs in starts and innings pitched last season, but struggled to match the production from his early campaigns.

He threw 132.1 innings across 25 appearances (23 starts) last year, but had a combined 4.96 ERA with the Dodgers and Red Sox.

The change of scenery didn’t work out as the Red Sox envisioned, with May posting a 5.40 ERA across six appearances. Boston let him walk in free agency despite surrendering significant prospect capital to acquire him from the Dodgers.

May signed a one-year, $12.5 million contract with the St. Louis Cardinals in the offseason, but the results have been more of the same as last year.

Dodgers’ return in the Dustin May trade

There were many factors working against May’s chances of staying with the organization that drafted him. He was a pending free agent who wasn’t performing up to the Dodgers’ standards and the team had plenty of pitching depth behind him.

The Dodgers have made out like bandits in the trade with Boston, acquiring James Tibbs III and Zach Ehrhard in exchange for two months of May. The pair were ranked as L.A.’s Nos. 10 and 17 prospects entering this season.

Tibbs in particular looks to be an absolute steal for the Dodgers, as he has enjoyed an excellent season with the Triple-A Oklahoma City Comets. He was named Pacific Coast League Player of the Week for the period of March 31–April 5.

The 23-year-old started in six games for Oklahoma City during that span, going 10-for-25 (.400) with a 1.523 on-base plus slugging percentage, along with one double, five home runs, and four walks.
