The Los Angeles Dodgers World Series roster was officially set Friday morning and as expected it did not include Alex Vesia among the team’s 12 active pitchers.
The Dodgers announced on Thursday that Vesia was away from the team and with his wife, Kayla, due to a “deeply personal family matter.” While speaking with reporters shortly after, manager Dave Roberts indicated the Dodgers weren’t certain of Vesia’s potential availability for the World Series.
“I think right now, we’re in the mode of trying to understand the process, the rules, a way that we could sort of try to navigate the roster,” Roberts said. “Honestly, I think we’re just going day-to-day with really no expectations.”
One potential option was for the Dodgers to put Vesia on the Family Medical Emergency List. Doing so would allow for him to maintain some eligibility for the World Series.
According to Jack Harris of the L.A. Times, the Dodgers did not proceed as such with Vesia and thus he is likely to be out for the entirety of the World Series:
My understanding is that Vesia is not being placed on the Family Medical Emergency List
So he will be out for the duration of the World Series, barring a potential injury-replacement scenario https://t.co/OMntUuoLK4

Going on MLB’s Family Medical Emergency List requires a player to miss a minimum of three days and they can be away from the team for up to one week. Had that been the option the Dodgers chose, Vesia would’ve been eligible to join the team as soon as Game 3 at Dodger Stadium.
Given what appears to be a serious situation for the family, it’s not much of a surprise that the Dodgers decided against putting any sort of timeline on Vesia.
Edgardo Henriquez and Will Klein were new additions to the roster, with Ben Casparius joining his fellow left-handed reliever in being removed.
Could Alex Vesia still pitch in World Series?
If Vesia felt comfortable returning from his personal leave at any point, the only scenario with which he could be added onto the Dodgers roster during the World Series would be by replacing an injured player.
