Last month the Los Angeles Dodgers unveiled their Nike City Connect uniform and wore it for the first two games of a weekend series against the New York Mets. Now the team will be back in their all-blue look for the ESPN Sunday Night Baseball matchup with the San Francisco Giants.
First pitch at Oracle Park is set for 4:08 p.m. PT and will exclusively be televised by ESPN for a national broadcast. The finale caps off a three-game series in which the National League West lead is up for grabs.
It’s unclear if the Giants will also wear an alternate look, as they too were among the seven inaugural teams selected this season for the Nike City Connect series. The Giants did previously wear their Golden Gate Bridge-inspired jersey during a July home game against the Dodgers.
While the Giants were widely criticized for their design, reaction to the Dodgers’ City Connect jersey was a bit more balanced.
The new uniform features a blue jersey with “Los Dodgers” written in white across the chest in the franchise’s iconic font and is accompanied by black spray-painted accents on the sleeves to represent L.A.’s street art culture and murals.
The Dodgers also redesigned their cap to have “Los Dodgers” and completed the look with blue pants. It’s the first time in Dodgers franchise history they have an all-blue uniform.
“The Dodger uniform is an iconic part of the franchise’s identity. While our traditional look has and will always be worn by the franchise-great players, the City Connect program offered us the opportunity to recognize the impact and importance of our multicultural fanbase,” Dodgers executive vice president and chief marketing officer Lon Rosen said in a statement.
“We’re excited to debut these City Connect uniforms on the field and know our fans will enjoy seeing ‘Los Dodgers’ on the uniforms as well as our new murals, which bring Los Angeles’ street art culture to Dodger Stadium.”
Reaction to Dodgers City Connect jersey
Some Dodgers fans expressed disappointment in the design, with the most popular complaints being it is too similar to the team’s blue jersey used during Spring Training. There also suggestions that the jersey instead read “Los Doyers.”
