The Los Angeles Dodgers are on a four-game winning streak and enter play Thursday with an opportunity to complete a series sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies. Despite their recent momentum, L.A. remains four games back of the San Francisco Giants in the National League West.
Mitch White is back up with the Dodgers and Kevin Quackenbush was designated for assignment as the corresponding roster move. Quackenbush joined the team last week and appeared in one game, which was his first at the Major League level since 2018.
White, who had previously been earmarked by Dodgers manager Dave Roberts to pitch the majority of Thursday’s game, makes a second career start. He’s yet to earn a decision in 15 games (one start) and has pitched to a 3.75 ERA and 1.33 WHIP thus far.
White’s first career Major League start came on July 31 and under similar circumstances, but he believed the short notice was a benefit.
Ranger Suárez makes just his third start of the season and enters 5-3 with a 0.98 ERA and 0.85 WHIP through 29 games thus far. One of his relief appearances came against the Dodgers on June 15, when he allowed just one run but took a loss.
Similar to the Dodgers, the Phillies effectively are going with a bullpen game. Suárez is yet to throw more than three innings in either of his first two starts.
As expected, Justin Turner is out of the lineup for a third consecutive game as he continues to recover from left groin discomfort. Roberts is hopeful Turner will start in Friday’s series opener against the New York Mets.
