Dodgers Vs. Padres Game Preview: Chance To Clinch Postseason Berth

Although Friday’s loss ruled out the possibility of clinching the National League West title at Petco Park, the Los Angeles Dodgers enter play in position to secure an MLB postseason berth.

Doing so would require the Dodgers defeating the San Diego Padres on Saturday, and receiving some help from the Cincinnati Reds against the Milwaukee Brewers. The earliest the Dodgers can win the NL West for a ninth time in the past 10 seasons is Tuesday at Chase Field.

Julio Urías takes the mound at Petco Park, where he’s a career 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA in six games (four starts). Urías allowed just one run on two hits over five innings when he last pitched at the Padres’ home ballpark in April.

He again held the Padres to just one run in a start against them last week. Urías only threw 78 pitches over six innings, but Dodgers manager made the decision to turn to the bullpen in order to manage his workload.

Urías has thrown 145.2 innings so far this season and figures to finish just below a career high set last year of 185.2. He currently leads the National League with a 2.29 ERA due to Tony Gonsolin no longer having enough innings to qualify on the leaderboard.

Blake Snell starts for the Padres and looks to build on his success against the Dodgers. He’s 1-0 with a 1.76 ERA in seven career starts, and had 12 strikeouts while allowing just one run over five innings when facing the Dodgers in July.

Snell is coming off a tough-luck loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks in which he struck out 10 and allowed one run on four hits and a walk.

Prior to the game the Dodgers placed Blake Treinen on the 15-day injured list due to right shoulder tightness and recalled Andre Jackson from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
