Dodgers Vs. Diamondbacks Game Preview: Bob Geren Managing For Dave Roberts

The Los Angeles Dodgers bounced back from being shut out for the first time this season with a 14-1 blowout of the Arizona Diamondbacks and now look to keep their offensive momentum rolling in the second of a four-game series at Chase Field.

With Tony Gonsolin being pushed back to Saturday, Ryan Pepiot is getting recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City to make his third career MLB start. Friday was the first day Pepiot was eligible to be recalled, and Gonsolin being held until Saturday gives him an extra day of rest.

Pepiot long appeared to be the favorite to join the Dodgers this weekend as he last pitched on Sunday for OKC, throwing five scoreless innings.

Over his two starts at the Major League level, the Dodgers’ top pitching prospect has allowed three runs over seven innings (3.86 ERA) and held opponents to a .125 batting average.

The Diamondbacks counter with Madison Bumgarner, who makes his 10th start of the season. He enters at 2-2 with a 2.76 ERA, 4.65 FIP and 1.11 WHIP in 42.1 innings pitched.

Bumgarner was tabbed with a no-decision in his last start against the Chicago Cubs after allowing four runs on five hits and collecting seven strikeouts over a season-high seven innings pitched.

Having pitched in the National League West for his entire 14-year career, Bumgarner is plenty familiar with the Dodgers. In 39 career appearances against L.A. (38 starts), he is 15-16 with a 2.82 ERA and 1.12 WHIP across 239.1 innings pitched.

Bumgarner last faced the Dodgers on May 16 when he allowed three runs and six hits in five innings of work en route to his second loss of the season. The game was played without incident, which isn’t always the case when Bumgarner faces the Dodgers.

During a recent “Holding Kourt” episode, Justin Turner said players refer to Bumgarner as ‘The Sheriff,’ because of his propensity to police matters on the field.

Dodgers bench coach Bob Geren is filling in for manager Dave Roberts, who is attending his daughter’s high school graduation. Roberts is expected to rejoin the Dodgers on Saturday.

Geren was a skipper in the Oakland Athletics Minor League system for four years and was named manager of their Major League team in 2007. He guided Oakland to a 334-376 record (.470 winning percentage) over parts of four seasons.

The Athletics’ best season with Geren as manager was an 81-81 record and second-place finish in the American League West in 2010; he was fired 63 games into the 2011 campaign.
