Dodgers Vs. Cubs Series Opener Canceled & Rescheduled For Doubleheader Saturday

After going 4-1 on their homestand, the Los Angeles Dodgers were set to begin a road trip Friday, with their first stop at Wrigley Field for a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs. However, the series opener was canceled due to inclement weather.

The game has been postponed untiL Saturday, when the Dodgers and Cubs will now play a split doubleheader. The first game is scheduled to begin at 10:05 a.m. PT, with the second contest due to start at 4:40 p.m. PT.

The Dodgers now have two sets of a split doubleheader this month, with their other coming against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Dodger Stadium on May 17 to make up lost games from their original schedule due to the MLB lockout.

Meanwhile, this is a second time this season the Dodgers have been impacted by weather, though the first case was only a rain delay in the eighth inning of an April 12 game against the Minnesota Twins.

It’s the first rainout for the Dodgers since another series opener at Wrigley Field was postponed from May 3, 2021, to the following day. That also amounted to a doubleheader, though both of those games were only scheduled to be seven innings.

The nightcap of the twin bill went nine innings, and the Dodgers also played into extras the following night in the series finale.

Under the 2022-26 MLB collective bargaining agreement, doubleheaders are back to being nine innings each. Current rules will allow for both teams to carry a 27th player on their active rosters for the doubleheader.

Such player does not need to have waited the minimum period of 10 days for a position player and 15 days for a pitcher if they were recently optioned. In the Dodgers’ case, that would make Andre Jackson, Garrett Cleavinger and Zach McKinstry each eligible to be called up.

The Dodgers presumably will add a 15th pitcher to their active roster for the doubleheader.

Dodgers pitching probables for Cubs series

Tyler Anderson was scheduled to start the series opener, followed by Clayton Kershaw on Saturday and Walker Buehler in the finale that is an ESPN Sunday Night Baseball broadcast.

Anderson and Kershaw remain the respective starters for the split doubleheader on Saturday. Kershaw is scheduled to take the mound in the first game, with Anderson starting the second contest.
