The Triple-A Oklahoma City Dodgers were led by some of the organization’s top prospects in an 11-1 victory over Triple-A New Orleans Baby Cakes (Miami Marlins affiliate). Oklahoma City hit three home runs, one of which came from an unlikely source.
The first homer was in the fifth inning off the red-hot bat of second-base prospect Willie Calhoun. His two-run shot to right field extended the Dodgers’ lead to 4-0. Calhoun is batting .301/.353/.538 with 10 home runs and 21 RBIs this season.
Trevor Oaks then helped his own cause in the top of the eighth inning, as he launched a towering three-run home run to left field:
Not only did Oaks contribute with the bat, he also pitched his best game of the season. The right-hander allowed just two hits in seven shutout innings while striking out seven. In 10 starts this season with OKC, Oaks is 2-1 with a 3.46 ERA and 1.21 WHIP.
Another of the Dodgers top prospects, outfielder Alex Verdugo, put an exclamation mark on the victory in the ninth inning when he hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot:
Verdugo is also off to a solid start to the season, slashing .317/.396/.398 with 24 RBIs and 25 runs scored in 44 games.
Verdugo was selected by the Dodgers in the second round of the 2014 Draft, while Oaks was taken in the seventh round that same year. The 22-year-old Calhoun was a fourth-round pick by the Dodgers in 2015.
