The Los Angeles Dodgers completed a surprise trade late Friday night, acquiring Curtis Granderson and cash considerations from the New York Mets. The Dodgers’ cost in the deal was cash or a player to be named later.

Granderson brings with him a wealth of experience, including postseason and World Series, versatility in the outfield, and is a strong presence that should mesh seamlessly with a workman-like clubhouse. The 36-year-old is making his Dodgers debut in left field on Saturday and batting fifth.

The start in left is only Granderson’s fifth this season, though it’s a position he figures to play most often with Los Angeles.

Prior to first pitch at Comerica Park, Granderson took the time to express his excitement and deliver a message to Dodgers fans, which the team shared on Twitter:

— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) August 19, 2017

Granderson batted .228/.334/.481 with 22 doubles, three triples, 19 home runs and 52 RBI in 111 games with the Mets this season. He endured a slow start to the season and has come on of late, hitting .276/.399/.603 13 doubles, 16 home runs and 38 RBI over 71 games since May 21.

In similar fashion to acquiring Yu Darvish at the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, adding Granderson is a move by the Dodgers with an eye on October and their quest to win the franchise’s first World Series since 1988.

Darvish and Granderson may ultimately end up rentals, as both are eligible for free agency this winter.
