It wasn’t to the level of the offseason after the 2017 campaign, but last year saw nearly a handful of Los Angeles Dodgers players get married, both before and following the franchise’s World Series win.
Edwin Rios tied the knot prior to reporting for Spring Training last year, while Brusdar Graterol, Corey Seager and Will Smith did so after the Dodgers won the title. Seager and Rios recently appeared on a special SportsNet LA segment, along with Clayton Kershaw.
The three players were accompanied by their respective wives for “The Glove Connection,” which was a baseball version of the famed “Newlywed Game” that was popular decades ago.
“We got married in 2010, so we have a big advantage in this game regardless, because we’re the salty vets in the crew,” Kershaw said before the questions began. “So we feel pretty confident about it.”
Kershaw’s confidence did not pan out, however, as he and Ellen quickly fell behind the Seagers and Rios. Part of that stemmed from a disagreement on where the Kershaws had their first date. Clayton was correct in remembering it was a restaurant, however he did not say Chili’s.
That question provided one of the more lighthearted moments of the segment as it was revealed the Seagers had their first date at prom. Coincidentally, Edwin and Lacey Rios also had their first date at Chili’s.
The Rios won the game with six points, narrowly edging the Seagers’ five. The Kershaws brought up the back with three points.
Kershaw looking forward to Opening Day
Kershaw had a rough ending to Spring Training but he remained optimistic and was filled with excitement heading into the regular season and a ninth career Opening Day start.
“I’m excited to get going,” he said. “I really am. I’m excited to get there, have that adrenaline, those butterflies and get going again. I’m excited about it.”
