The Los Angeles Dodgers returned from a disappointing road trip with a 5-1 win over the Chicago White Sox on what was Will Smith bobblehead night at Dodger Stadium.
Smith has previously been recognized by the team in bobblehead form, including last year when they incorporated his Hollywood actor’s namesake and “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” show. Smith’s latest bobblehead had him back in a Dodgers uniform and again included his wife, Cara Smith, throwing out the ceremonial first pitch.
While Cara had thrown out the first pitch in other instances, she did so Tuesday night with the couple’s first child, Charlotte, in tow. Smith fittingly was behind the plate to catch it.
After enjoying the pregame festivities with his family, Smith provided the Dodgers with an early lead by hitting a two-run home run in the first inning. David Peralta added his own two-run homer, and L.A. never looked back.
“Any win is obviously important,” Smith said after the game. “But tonight, you know, kind of a rough road trip. A couple games got away from us, but it’s good to get an off day yesterday, back in today and get a big win.”
Smith added he believed Lance Lynn was looking to get a ground ball and would rely on his sinker.
“Just kind of looking middle-in,” Smith said. “He likes throw the sinker in those situations. That’s what I got, and that’s about it.”
The homers by Smith and Peralta gave the Dodgers 59 runs in the first inning of games this season, which is most in the Majors.
“I guess we just got pretty good hitters up there,” answered Smith when asked what’s allowed the team to lead in that category. “We just take good at-bats, we have a good approach and more times than not, we execute.”
MLB All-Star Game voting update: Will Smith
Although the Dodgers have Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts and J.D. Martinez tracking to start for the National League in 2023 MLB All-Star Game, Smith is trailing at catcher.
The first All-Star Game voting update had him in second place among NL catchers, roughly 185,000 votes behind the Atlanta Braves’ Sean Murphy.
