Dodgers Video: Brusdar Graterol Tosses Fish At Pike Place Fish Market

With the Los Angeles Dodgers taking a short trip to Seattle for a three-game series with the Mariners, it gave Brusdar Graterol the chance to check out a famous tourist attraction.

Graterol visited the Pike Place Fish Market at Pike Place Market in Seattle, which attracts roughly 10,000 daily visitors. Founded in 1930, the market became famous for its tradition of fishmongers throwing fish that was purchased by customers before they wrap it up.

The market is frequently visited by celebrities, and Graterol became the latest to participate in the fish tossing.

Graterol, who said he was very excited to go, got a quick lesson from the fishmongers. He then caught a fish tossed to him before throwing it back, which he joked would be a fastball.

Despite his fastball that can reach triple-digits during a game, the fish flew in the air at a significantly lower speed.

Graterol also saw their popular monkfish, which they sometimes make “snap” at customers by using a hidden line. One of the employees told Graterol to give the monkfish a kiss before making it move.

The Pike Place Fish Market’s routine typically involves a customer ordering a fish, the fishmongers in orange rubber overalls and boots will call out the order which is loudly shouted back by all the other staff, at which point the original fishmonger will throw the customer’s fish behind the counter to be wrapped.

Occasionally they will throw a foam fish into the crowd or select a customer from the crowds to participate in the fish toss.

The market was near bankruptcy in 1986 before one employee suggested they make it famous by throwing fish, playing games with customers and fun attitudes from employees.

Brusdar Graterol contributes to NL West title

After visiting the fish market, Graterol went on to pitch a scoreless inning when the Dodgers faced the Mariners later that night. He gave up no hits and no walks while striking out one in the Dodgers’ National League West-clinching victory.

Graterol has often been used this season in high-leverage situations, and overall he has posted a 1.30 ERA with a 1.04 WHIP in 62.1 innings.
