Sometimes, an athlete or figure can transcend a sport. In his 67th and final season, Vin Scully has just about done it all when it comes to the game of baseball.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have been fortunate enough to become synonymous with someone many believe is the voice of baseball. Although Scully has scaled back and largely been limited to home games in the latter stages of his career, he’s made local trips on the West Coast.
The 88 year old is open to a more expansive road schedule, and was there Opening Day at Petco Park against the San Diego Padres.
The Hall-of-Fame broadcaster made his final trip to Angel Stadium on Thursday, which saw the Dodgers drop the Freeway Series finale.
Prior to the game, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim presented Scully with an assortment of gifts during a private ceremony. Angels manager Mike Scioscia and center fielder Mike Trout were among those to honor Scully:
Then, prior to the top of the second inning, Angel Stadium honored Scully with a video message, leading to a standing ovation:
Although Scully has repeatedly mentioned he doesn’t want the spotlight in his final season, baseball fans across the country continue to pay their respect by various methods.
