While the Los Angeles Dodgers became the first team in the Majors to 70 wins this season, one of the organization’s top prospects added to what’s been an impressive 2017 campaign.
Alex Verdugo went 2-for-5 Tuesday night with a home run and game-high four RBI, though it came in a loss as Triple-A Oklahoma City fell to the Pacific Conference-leading Reno Aces (Arizona Diamondbacks affiliate), 9-7.
Verdugo singled in the bottom of the fourth to extend his on-base streak to 41 games. Verdugo’s home run, a three-run shot, came in the bottom of the eighth and trimmed the Aces’ lead to one run.
It also came in odd fashion, as Verdugo’s drive was more double, perhaps triple, than home run. His fly ball to right field hit off Zach Borenstein’s head and carried over the fence for a homer.
The play of course is reminiscent to Jose Canseco going back on a fly ball in right field, one hit deeper than Verdugo’s, and having it hit off his head and go for a home run. The odd homer also wasn’t the first the Oklahoma City Dodgers have been involved in this season.
In May, Trayce Thompson was tracking a fly ball hit to center field, went up a short hill and appeared to have a read on it, only for the ball to ricochet off his glove for a walk-off home run.
