After going quiet at the plate through the first two games of their series against the Cincinnati Reds, the Los Angeles Dodgers found better success Sunday afternoon. They then exploded to earn a series split on Monday.
Los Angeles got off to a quick start, taking a 3-0 lead on Homer Bailey a mere four pitches into the game. Chase Utley and Corey Seager both singled in the first inning, which set the stage for an Adrian Gonzalez three-run homer.
It was a fitting blast considering Gonzalez entered play Monday with plenty of career success against Bailey. The home run was also the first of three Gonzalez slugged on the day.
After the Reds chipped away at their deficit, the Dodgers responded with an onslaught of home runs in the fifth inning.
Andrew Toles and Rob Segedin hit back-to-back homers, with it being the first home run for each rookie.
Later in the inning, Seager and Gonzalez hit consecutive home runs. Gonzalez then combined with Yasmani Grandal for back-to-back homers in the seventh inning, putting the game well out of reach.
The Dodgers’ four home runs in the fifth was the first time they hit that many in a single inning since doing so as part of a comeback against the San Diego Padres in 2006. Video of the Dodgers’ barrage of home runs is provided via the club’s Twitter account:
