The Los Angeles Dodgers finished their homestand with a series sweep of the Washington Nationals. In three highly contested games, a bounce here and there played a role in the Dodgers’ three victories.
While Wednesday’s game will forever be remembered by Yasiel Puig’s incredible run around the bases on a ninth-inning base hit that turned into a Little League home run, the Dodgers also turned in an improbable defensive play.
It took place in the top of the fifth inning with Nationals starter Joe Ross batting against Julio Urias. Ross popped up into foul territory down the right field line, with Adrian Gonzalez, Puig and Chase Utley tracking it.
Utley stuck his glove back over his shoulder in an effort to make the catch, was unable to, but Gonzalez was there to glove the ricochet on his second attempt for the first out of the inning:
Gonzalez’s catch was enough to leave the normally stoic Utley in some disbelief. Urias struck out the next batter and gave up a two-out double to Jayson Werth. After a visit to the mound from A.J. Ellis, the young southpaw locked in and retired Bryce Harper to end the inning.
Urias finished with six strikeouts and just two runs allowed over five innings of work.
