Dodgers Updates: Tyler Glasnow, Blake Snell, Will Smith, Edwin Díaz & Kiké Hernández

The Los Angeles Dodgers continue to pace all teams in wins this season despite still being without the likes of Edwin Díaz, Tyler Glasnow, Kiké Hernández, Will Smith and Blake Snell, among others.

Over recent weeks they have welcomed back Tommy Edman, Teoscar Hernández and Evan Phillips from the injured list. In Phillips’ case, his activation on Monday marked the first time being on the Dodgers roster this season as he had been recovering from last year’s Tommy John surgery.

Meanwhile, Hernández, Díaz and Snell are each making steady progress. Glasnow and Smith continue to lag behind comparatively.

Dodgers injury updates

Tyler Glasnow

What was initially deemed minor back trouble has now kept Glasnow out since May 8. There were multiple setbacks when Glasnow attempted to start a throwing progression and while he’s now seemingly cleared that hurdle, it’s not yet known when the right-hander will manage to pitch off a mound.

“I think that Glass is sort of just, he’s playing catch,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “I think he feels good. I haven’t heard anything otherwise. But I haven’t heard much of a progression, either.”

Kiké Hernández

In contrast to Glasnow’s situation, Hernández has made significant progress since suffering a left oblique strain while taking batting practice on the day of his season debut. The expectation is Hernández will soon begin a rehab assignment.

“He’s taking live ABs, and he looks really good defensively. The throw, the swing is aggressive, really good,” Roberts said.

Hernández faced live pitching for a second time on Wednesday.

Edwin Díaz

Days after his first time throwing to batters, Díaz did so again before the series finale between the Dodgers and Colorado Rockies. He faced Hernández and Alex Freeland.

“Command wasn’t there, but the ball was coming out really good,” Roberts said. “I think that they’re going to kind of put their heads together to figure it out. So, I’m not sure, as we sit here on Wednesday, when’s the next time he’s going to throw, but my assumption would probably be Sunday or something like that.”

Díaz’s velocity was around 95 mph and he continues to make progress toward starting a rehab assignment shortly after the All-Star break.

Blake Snell

Snell has thrown multiple bullpen sessions, the latest of which came on Wednesday, and next he’s scheduled to face batters Saturday for the first time since having left elbow surgery to remove loose bodies.

Will Smith

Smith is still swinging a bat but more to keep his body moving than seemingly making his way toward a rehab assignment.

“It’s not a ramp-up situation,” Roberts said. “It’s just kind of trying to stay active.”
