Dodgers Updates: Tommy Edman & Teoscar Hernández Expected To Face Live Pitching

The Los Angeles Dodgers are missing two important pieces of their lineup with Tommy Edman and Teoscar Hernández both on the 10-day injured list.

Hernández was initially expected to miss multiple weeks with a Grade 1 adductor/groin strain, but there now is a sense he will return much quicker than anticipated. The Dodgers have been encouraged by Hernández’s progress and believe he could miss around two weeks if he continues to recover without any setbacks.

It has been the complete opposite for Edman, whose return has been repeatedly delayed since injuring his right ankle in a game against the Miami Marlins on April 29. Edman was projected to be activated for the final two games of the Dodgers’ series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, but he is still unable to run without issue due to the inflammation in his right ankle.

While neither Edman nor Hernández are expected to return in the immediate future, both will be taking live at-bats next week, according to Bill Plunkett of the Southern California News Group:

The Dodgers will bring in minor-league pitchers to throw live batting practice to Teoscar Hernandez and Tommy Edman during next week’s homestand.

Edman being able to complete his hitting work is nothing new, but it is noteworthy that it has been over a week since his injury and there is still discomfort in the right ankle. Edman sprained his right ankle last year while on a rehab assignment for offseason wrist surgery, but the latest trouble was said to be more mild.

It is a significant update for Hernández, as it is an encouraging sign that his groin injury has continued to heal at a faster rate than initially believed.

Dodgers platooning due to injuries

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts revealed the team will mainly utilize platoon matchups while Hernández is out.

The Dodgers have slid Andy Pages back to his natural spot in right field, while filling the vacancy in center field with a rotation. Left-handed hitters have started all four games in Hernández’s absence, with James Outman receiving three of those and Hyeseong Kim starting the other.
