Tyler Glasnow Not ‘Worried’ About Latest Back Issue

The Los Angeles Dodgers salvaged their road trip with a series win against the Houston Astros and overall split of the six games, but it came with some initial concern as Tyler Glasnow left his start Wednesday without throwing a single pitch in the second inning.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and a trainer went out to check on Glasnow after he appeared uncomfortable upon throwing a warmup pitch. A quick conversation gave way to the right-hander being removed from his start for what the Dodgers later announced was because of low back pain.

Tyler Glasnow’s back injury

“Just a spasm that kind of just gives out. I’ve gotten it since, I don’t know, like high school. Being tall I guess I get it a couple times a year,” Glasnow explained on SportsNet LA after the game.

“It was just on a warmup pitch, it gave out. I tried to throw another one and it was too hard to bend over. But it’s not too serious. I’ve had this a few times. It’s just one of those things where it’s thrown out and once it feels better, it feels better. It shouldn’t be too long.”

Glasnow added “everything felt really good” prior to feeling his back pain when warming up for the second inning.

He experienced a similar issue last season that led to being scratched from a start against the Baltimore Orioles. Glasnow was back on the mound three days later, firing seven innings. But in 2024, he spent three weeks on the injured list due to lower back tightness.

The 32-year-old was reluctant to definitively state which outcome he expected to unfold this time around but noted it’s the “same type of thing” as last year’s minor back trouble.

“I’m not worried about it at all. It’s more of I just hope I can come back sooner rather than later,” Glasnow continued. “It doesn’t feel too serious, so I’m not too worried about it.”

What will ultimately determine matters is how quickly Glasnow begins to feel improvement and recover.

“It’s more like the next few days. Sometimes it’s longer, sometimes it’s shorter. It doesn’t feel too bad right now,” he said. “It’s never too long, it’s just more about however much time I do take off, I have to build back up. But I’m trying to go as quick as possible.

“Obviously not trying to make it any worse, but I’m not super worried about it. But we’ll see.”

What’s next for Glasnow?

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Glasnow is expected to undergo an MRI on his back once the team returns from their road trip. That could come as early as Thursday, which is an off day in their schedule, or perhaps Friday morning.

Regardless, Roberts also suggested minimal to no concern.

“I don’t expect it to be an IL situation and I don’t think he does either,” Roberts said. “We’ll go from there.”
