Before facing the Houston Astros in a rematch of the 2017 World Series, the Los Angeles Dodgers honored a former franchise stalwart by welcoming Andre Ethier back to Dodger Stadium for a retirement ceremony.

As expected, the Dodgers bought out the final year of Ethier’s contract, making him a free agent at the conclusion of last season. He hoped to sign with a contender but ultimately found contract offers few and far between.

Thus, as Spring Training and the start of the 2018 campaign came and went, the 36-year-old was all but formally retired. Not one for the spotlight, Ethier relented and allowed the Dodgers and his former teammates to pay tribute, while also showing his appreciation for the fans.

The on-field ceremony was hosted by “Arrested Development” star Jason Bateman, and included speeches from Matt Kemp, Clayton Kershaw and Kenley Jansen. The trio also presented Ethier with a donation to the Union Mission that matched a contribution from Ethier and wife, and the Dodgers played a tribute video for the beloved former outfielder.

Though he was drafted in the second round by the Oakland Athletics in 2003, Ethier played each of his 1,455 Major League games and 12 seasons with the Dodgers. He made two All-Star teams and finished finished ranked eighth in franchise history in both extra-base hits and doubles.
