Trea Turner was named National League Player of the Week for games played Sept. 27-Oct. 3. He is the fourth member of the Los Angeles Dodgers to earn the recognition this season, joining AJ Pollock (July 5-11), Chris Taylor (July 19-25) and Max Scherzer (Sept. 6-12).
It marks the first time Turner has ever received the honor, though he was named NL Rookie of the Month for both August and September during the 2016 season.
The dynamic infield started all six games this past week, hitting .458/.480/.917 with eight runs scored, two doubles, three home runs, 11 RBI and one stolen base en route to running away with the NL batting title.
Two of Turner’s homers were grand slams during the final series against the Milwaukee Brewers. He became the first Dodgers player with two grand slams in a three-game stretch since Mike Piazza accomplished the feat on April 9 and 10, 1998.
Turner additionally is the first Dodger to win the NL batting title since Tommy Davis in 1963, and the organization’s seventh player overall. He also became the first Dodger since Jackie Robinson in 1949 to win the batting title and lead the league in stolen bases.
Turner finished the regular season on a career-best 19-game hitting streak, which came shortly after a stretch of collecting at least one hit in 16 consecutive games was snapped.
Buehler puts Turner in NL MVP discussion
Following Turner’s emphatic finish to the regular season, Walker Buehler touted him as a candidate for NL MVP.
“I don’t know why Trea isn’t getting spoken about in the MVP stuff as much. He’s had an extremely special year and had a year that not many players can have,” Buehler said. “You can hit 100 homers or whatever, but Trea is a special player and a game-changing player.
“I think Trea Turner needs to be on the minds of some people.”
