Trea Turner: Dodger Stadium Had Playoff-Type Atmosphere For Mets Series Opener

Trea Turner was among the few bright spots for the Los Angeles Dodgers as they were swept by the Pittsburgh Pirates, and he contributed in their 2-0 win over the New York Mets on Thursday. The matchup was the first of the season between the teams with the two best records in the National League.

Turner’s leadoff double in the sixth inning extended his hitting streak to an MLB-best 25 games and eventually led to a run when Justin Turner connected for a two-out extra-base hit. “We knew we were better than what we played like,” Trea Turner said after the win.

“Tonight wasn’t necessarily the prettiest, but you’ve got to win in different ways. The pitching was really, really special for us. Tony (Gonsolin) was really good, bullpen was really good, and we got that win.”

During a postgame interview with Kirsten Watson on SportsNet LA, Gavin Lux said the atmosphere at Dodger Stadium felt like a playoff game. The series opener garnered an announced attendance of 48,018 for Justin Turner replica jersey night.

“A little bit,” answered Trea Turner when asked if he sensed more of a postseason intensity playing against the Mets.

“I would say it felt a little different because they’ve been playing good baseball. As have we, other than the last few games. Two of the best records in baseball going head-to-head and could be a potential matchup down the road, and just a good baseball team, so it felt a little more intense. It was fun.”

Turner familiar with Mets

Having spent nearly his entire career in the NL East, Turner has seen plenty of the Mets over the years.

“I think it’s a lot of familiar faces, but then there’s always new guys. I faced a new pitcher tonight, so a little bit of both,” he said. “You kind of know what to expect but I feel like they’re a different team than they were in years past.

“It’s funny when me and Freddie (Freeman) play the NL East, I feel like we’ve played these teams a million times, but they just change a little bit.”
