The Los Angeles Dodgers announced they have acquired Tyler Glasnow and Manuel Margot from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for Ryan Pepiot and Jonny DeLuca. The Dodgers also received $4 million in cash considerations as part of the deal.

The Dodgers had a goal of adding a frontline starting pitcher this offseason, and the acquisition of Glasnow certainly gives them one. When healthy, the right-hander is one of the most talented starters in the league.

Glasnow went 10-7 with a 3.53 ERA, 2.91 FIP, 1.08 WHIP and 12.2 strikeouts per nine in 120 innings pitched over 21 starts this year. He missed nearly the first two months of the season due to a left oblique strain, but managed to stay on the field the rest of the way.

Since joining the Rays in 2018, Glasnow ranks fourth among starting pitchers in strikeouts per nine (12.19) and batting average against (.195), and is tied for seventh in FIP (3.10).

Margot fills the Dodgers’ need for an outfielder and right-handed bat. However, he has also dealt with injury trouble throughout his career.

Margot played in just 99 games this year, hitting .264/.310/.376 with 21 doubles, four home runs and 38 RBI. He has fared much better against left-handed pitching and figures to form a platoon with Jason Heyward in right field during the 2024 season.

Pepiot showed promise after returning from an oblique injury that sidelined him until August of this past season, posting a 2.14 ERA and 4.18 FIP while striking out nearly 24% of hitters in 42 innings of work.

The 25-year-old gives the Rays another young, controllable starter who isn’t scheduled to become a free agent until after the 2028 season.

DeLuca made his MLB debut this year and batted .262/.311/.429 with a 102 wRC+. Despite his success, he likely would not have factored into the Dodgers’ long-term plans.

Dodgers sign Tyler Glasnow to contract extension

The Dodgers’ trade for Glasnow was contingent on him signing a contract extension, and the team locked him up for the next five seasons. The 30-year-old will earn $135 million over that time, which includes his $25 million salary for the 2024 season.

The Dodgers additionally hold a club option on Glasnow for the 2029 season that is worth $30 million. If that is declined, Glasnow reportedly has a $20 million player option he could exercise.
