In the weeks leading up to the MLB trade deadline, the Los Angeles Dodgers were connected to the likes of Luis Castillo, Brandon Drury, Whit Merrifield, Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto.

The Cincinnati Reds wound up trading Castillo to the Seattle Mariners for a haul of prospects, and the Angels made a decision to keep Ohtani past the Aug. 2 deadline.

On deadline day, the San Diego Padres struck a deal to acquire Soto and Josh Bell from the Washington Nationals. Meanwhile, the Dodgers’ first move was to trade for Joey Gallo, and shortly before the deadline, send Jake Lamb to Seattle Mariners.

That since has been followed by the Dodgers trading Mitch White and Alex De Jesus to the Toronto Blue Jays for Minor League pitchers Nick Frasso and Moises Brito.

White recently was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City because of a need in the bullpen, but the roster move was not indicative of performance. White settled into a swingman role for the Dodgers this season and was touted by manager Dave Roberts as being invaluable to the pitching staff.

De Jesus hit a combined .272 with 11 home runs and 48 RBI for Single-A Rancho Cucamonga and High-A Great Lakes this season. He was with the Dodgers organization four seasons after signing as an international free agent out of Santo Domino, Dominican Republic, on July 3, 2018.

Frasso went 0-0 with 0.74 ERA and 57 strikeouts in 10 games between Single-A Dunedin and High-A Vancouver. The 23-year-old was selected by Blue Jays in the fourth round of the 2020 MLB Draft.

Brito, a Blue Jays’ international signing from this year, went 2-4 with a 1.86 ERA in 12 games (two starts) for their Dominican Summer League team.

The Dodgers and Blue Jays have a history of recent trades, including Ross Stripling in 2020, and Russell Martin the following year.

Dodgers trade deadline activity

Prior to their trades on Tuesday, the Dodgers’ first two moves leading up to the deadline involved the bullpen.

They acquired Chris Martin from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for Zach McKinstry, and traded Garrett Cleavinger to the Tampa Bay Rays for Minor League outfielder German Tapia.
