The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired Jason Wheeler from the Minnesota Twins on Friday in exchange for cash considerations. Wheeler was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma city.
The Twins designated Wheeler for assignment on the Wednesday. That came one day after Wheeler’s contract was selected and he made his MLB. The 26-year-old allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits, including one home run, and issued four walks in three innings across two appearances with Minnesota.
In eight games (seven starts) this season for Triple-A Rochester, the southpaw went 4-1 with a 4.50 ERA and 1.30 WHIP. He’s 55-37 with a 3.70 ERA in 140 Minor League games (139 starts) over six seasons.
The Torrance, Calif., native was selected by the Twins out of Loyola Marymount University in the eighth round of the 2011 Draft.
Rob Segedin, who recently underwent wrist surgery, was transferred to the 60-day disabled list to create room on the 40-man roster for Wheeler.
While trade activity sure to increase over the next month and throughout July, the Dodgers have seemingly gotten a head start by making minor moves in recent weeks. Last Sunday, the team traded Darnell Sweeney to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for future considerations.
Prior to that, Los Angeles claimed Mike Freeman and Chris Heston off waivers from the Seattle Mariners.
