Dodgers Trade Deadline Rumors: Searching For ‘Impact’ Outfielder

The 2024 MLB trade deadline is less than one week away and the Los Angeles Dodgers are exploring the market for impact additions to the roster as they prepare for a postseason run.

On paper, the Dodgers entered the year with one of the best rosters in all of baseball after an offseason spending spree that saw them doll out over $1 billion in contracts. Now well into the dog days of summer, a lot has changed for the Dodgers roster.

A pitching staff that was performing like a top unit during parts of April and certainly in May and June, has seen its stock plummet. Efficiency and production from the Dodgers rotation has waned thanks to countless injuries and inconsistent performance from players who were expected to be contributors.

The Dodgers bullpen has also seen its fair share of struggles recently, but remains one of the better groups.

However, the Dodgers appear to be active on multiple fronts and will not be singleminded in their pursuit of starting pitching as they look to trade for a marquee outfielder as well, according to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com:

The Dodgers aren’t just looking for an impact arm, as sources said Los Angeles is also hoping to add an impact bat in the outfield prior to next Tuesday.

The Dodgers certainly could use some more juice from their role players and bench as the lineup struggles to receive consistent production from anyone outside of Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, Will Smith, Teoscar Hernández, or Mookie Betts when he is healthy.

Andy Pages has been around league average in terms of offensive production, but the Dodgers are going to need more than that if they want to give themselves the best shot to win a championship.

Gavin Lux has come on strong as of late, including being named National League Player Of The Week. It is a welcome breakthrough that the Dodgers have been waiting all season for, but the team shouldn’t put all their eggs in that basket considering his year as a whole.

Dodgers trade deadline: outfielders

Among potential outfielders available at the trade deadline, the Dodgers have been connected to Luis Robert Jr. of the Chicago White Sox, and the Tampa Bay Rays’ Randy Arozarena.

In both scenarios, a trade could — and likely would — be expanded to include a starting pitcher as well. Garrett Crochet is thought to be high on the Dodgers’ wishlist, and Zach Eflin of the Rays profiles as a starting pitcher they would have interest in.
