With just under three weeks until the MLB trade deadline on July 30, the Los Angeles Dodgers surprisingly find themselves in need of starting pitching.
That’s despite aggressively adding to the rotation during the offseason with a trade for Tyler Glasnow and signing of Yoshinobu Yamamoto. There also was plenty of depth the Dodgers expected to lean on throughout the course of the 2024 season.
However, multiple injuries and inconsistent performances have created a need.
While the Dodgers are also believed to have interest in acquiring at least one position player, it is known throughout the industry they continue to search for a starting pitcher as well, Jon Morosi said on MLB Network:
“I have heard from scout after scout, executive after executive, the Dodgers are in the market for starting pitching.”
As it currently stands, Dodgers starting pitchers on the injured list are Glasnow, Yamamoto, Clayton Kershaw, Walker Buehler, Emmet Sheehan, Tony Gonsolin and Dustin May.
Kershaw, Sheehan, Gonsolin and May are yet to pitch this season. Sheehan is going to miss all of 2024 after undergoing Tommy John surgery, and Gonsolin likely is going to be out until next year as well.
Kershaw is resuming his rehab assignment Saturday with Triple-A Oklahoma City, and Glasnow should return shortly after the All-Star break. However, there are not timelines for Buehler or May, the latter of whom is potentially going to fill a bullpen role this season.
Furthermore, Bobby Miller was optioned to work on his mechanics and it’s unclear when the Dodgers will recall the former top prospect.
Dodgers trade targets
As the Dodgers canvas the market for starting pitching help, they could look to acquire Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, his teammate Jack Flaherty, or Garrett Crochet or Eric Fedde of the Chicago White Sox.
They reportedly made a trade offer for Crochet that was immediately rejected by the White Sox, who nevertheless have increased in-person scouting efforts of the Dodgers’ farm system and other teams leading up to the trade deadline.
